So... Dave is a poet eh? I never knew this. Good work! What did you use to create this site? I'm taking Web Graphics and Multimedia this quarter at College and have Adobe Photoshop CS5 now. Will be getting Dreamweaver as well.

Immersion is an important part of it and can go a long way accepting the flaws and limits that exists in Computer RPGs (I found Mass Effect, an offline CRPG to be rather immersive).

The limitations of the technology is also a limitation of the design of online RPGs, as it has been quite some years since we've seen any huge leaps in the design. At the moment it seems things are pretty stagnant, and every time a new online RPG is announced, new features and leaps in the way we do things now are promised, something that usually isn't delivered. I have hopes for ToR (scrap it and make Mass Effect online) and Blizzard's unannounced project, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm still expecting to get my RPG fix when I sit down and roll some physical dice.

If we were at a stage where we could replicate the holodeck or its like, I'm confident that we'd overcome the issue of pre-designed worlds being static and lacking agency. Millions of scenarios and outcomes would probably be predetermined or even generated in seconds to answer the user's needs due to sophisticated algorithms.

Your paper makes many points that I've also observed first hand in tabletop and computer-based RPG game play, and I commend the insight. You've necessarily limited your discussion to considering the experiences of playing currently existing RPG platforms. A question I'd be interested in exploring is how much of the online RPG gameplay is dictated by current limitations of the technology? Consider for example, what will be the potential gameplay experience when online gameplay overcomes current limitations and becomes more immersive, e.g., as a 3D environment (a la evolving towards the sci-fantasy of the Star Trek holodeck). Will this free players to self identify and immerse themselves again in their characters as they did/do with tabletop RPG style play? Or will the limitations on imagination of the designer controlled world still restrict players of online, multiplay gaming from true role play?
